Running on the Beach

Good Evening Friends!

Summer Bucket List Item #8

Running on the Beach.
beach run

Are you a multitasker? If I told you that you could exfoliate your tootsies, wear a bikini, get in shape, and be on vacation all in the same sentence, wouldn’t you be enticed? The gig is running on the beach. It has become one of my new favorite things in LIFE!

For those of you who have difficulty with the MIND portion of mind, body, and sole*, you have got to put this on your bucket list ASAP. I know how challenging a run can be when you are having one of those… I. Just. Can’t. Go. Any. Farther!!!! moments. Believe me when I tell you that your thoughts will only become positive – the waves crashing on the shore and atmosphere at the beach will have you feeling great and going the distance!

Now, for those of you who are ready to get a more fit BODY, running is a fantastic tool! To change difficulty levels, try running in different types of sand. More compact sand occurs just before the waves end on the shore which is a bit easier and makes for a really solid run. If you want to feel like you are in a scene from Baywatch, run in the squishy sand where the water ripples on shore. You will cool off from the water splashing on your sun kissed skin and your feet will love the way the sand feels! For my friends who want a challenge, run in the soft sand that is a bit farther away from the water. This is much more difficult and really works your legs!

And, because I am just so clever…. for those of you who need to work on your SOLES*, running on the beach will give you the softest feet. Plus, you can save some major moola – Guuurrl, I am talking to you with the pedicured toes!!  Sand is a natural exfoliant and that salty ocean water aides as a natural healer for scars. Sounds like the perfect combo to me.

Mind, Body, and Sole ❤

One Hot Run

My friends! Today, I am not talking about looking hot while running (wish I was), I am talking about how to suit up for a run on a hot day!

This marks Summer Bucket List Day 3!!

run

A major part of my bucket list will always be to run as frequently as possible. Dressing the part isn’t always easy when it is humid and in the 90s all day LONG!! I do have a good rule of thumb, though the dorkier, the comfier. This rule does not just apply to running in extreme weather, it also applies to pajamas, slippers, sweatpants, & novelty t-shirts.

So, what do I typically wear in the heat on the trail? –Athletic socks, trail runner sneaks (mama needs the traction), a padded sports bra (yeah, I am a lady), a breathable and bright tank, a cap, sunscreen, bug spray (if you even knew the amount of bugs that have drowned in my sweat, died upon impact, & are in my belly, you’d be terrified), and “deo” for BO (just kidding about the BO, remember, I am a lady). And… my new, fav, dorky accessory- the towel I wrap around my neck!

Let me know about your tips for running!

Stay cool runner babes ❤

Things You Learn When You’re in Breckenridge

Hi Everyone! So sorry for my absence! Things have been nuts over here. But, I am snowed in on the East Coast and I am ready to blog again!

snowshoeI just got back last week from an amazing work trip to Colorado. We stayed in a massive resort home and I had a ton of fun checking a few things off of my bucket list! I went skiing (hilariously bad at that sport), snowmobiling to see the Continental Divide, and snowshoeing in search of woodland creatures (much more my speed). Here are some of the things I learned rather quickly while in “Breck”.

1) As neat as it seems to see a moose (or hear them hiccup), they are wayyyyy bigger than you think and they will ATTACK!

2) Unlike the East Coast, snow plowing and salting is not a necessity. Before you know it, you can walk on ice. Biking down an icy mountain in the dark (yes I did see this) would not be something to try.

3) You’re much closer to the sun (lol). Let’s say 9,000′ – 11,000′ above sea level – wear sunscreen and goggles.

4) Blue Slopes (AKA Intermediate Slopes) are like Black Diamonds back home…. that’s right, I was terrified.

5) Wearing snow boots or duck boots is awesome and essentially goes with everything. I am wishing that it was socially acceptable to wear my Cabela’s duck boots everywhere back here in Philly.

6) Tele girls are much cooler than all of the other girls on the slopes…apparently. (RULE 6.5: Telemarking is a downhill style of skiing where your heel picks up and involves lunging for stops and turns, etc. -Similar to cross country skiing.)

7) Your thirst will never be quenched.

8) Touring an ice castle is pure *magic*.

9) The woods and ski lifts are the most quiet places ever. So much more relaxing than I ever dreamt!

10) Last but not least, silk long johns are God-send!

These boots are made for walkin’ (on ice) ❤

Summer Bucket List 7/30: Try a Veggie Burger

Hi Friends!

When you think of Summer bucket lists, you probably think of grilling or having a picnic. When you think of grilling and picnics, you probably think of hotdogs and hamburgers. Now, I used to hate hotdogs; I had this whole problem with food that jiggled but I have since seen the light and now am a fan of the grilled weenie. However, burgers… burgers are a different story. I have a severe aversion to them. It was this whole beefy, juicy slider fiasco of 2007 that I would rather not relive – not just for my own benefit, but for yours too!

SUMMER BUCKET LIST 7/30: TRY A VEGGIE BURGER

2013 veggie burgerIn an effort to bring different versions of burgers back into my life, I decided to make my own veggie burger. I found a recipe on my “PopSugar” App which called for a mixture of quinoa, chickpeas, barley, sweet potato, and peppers, among other seasonings. I didn’t have barley, but I did have brown rice. I also didn’t have red peppers, but I did have red pepper flakes! I baked them instead of frying them in a pan and I must say they turned out great! I lightly pickled some cucumbers and used fat free sour cream on the side! It was a great dinner and I am ready to eat it again tonight…make that right now!!

Easy Riding Playlist

Happy Fitness Friday Everyone!

One thing that really gets my blood flowing at the gym, is angry music! (See my Bad A** playlist posts for inspiration) If people only knew that the girl with her hair in a braid and the hot pink Nike shirt frolicking around on the treadmills was actually listening to Rob Zombie, I think they’d be a little shocked! But, amongst the machines on the cardio floor of the gym are the stationary bikes. In that area, I really workout to a totally different tune. I prefer easy riding. On the bike I will catch up on my reading or I will listen to a lighter playlist and go with the flow. One that allows my mind to let loose and imagine that I am cycling through a *peaceful meadow*. When you are on the bike cranking out a smooth 20 mile distance, maybe some of the songs on my playlist will help you get there!

Easy on the ears and heavy on the pedals

Are you Hardcore Enough for this?

YAY! It is FITNESS FRIDAY! Now, 9 times out of 10, I try to blog about properly carrying oneself like a lady! But, when it comes to the gym – be a freak! Be a beast, get down with *yo bad sef*, sweat your bum off, don’t be afraid to go for the heavy weights, and most importantly, show the boys up! This post is long over due… I promised that shortly after I posted “The B.A. Girls’ Playlist Lite“, I would post the more hardcore version. I can personally say that these are songs I listen to just about every time I go to the gym. I swear it gets the juices flowin’, the heart a-pumpin’, and the sweat drippin’! I get so fired up from this playlist, and I am certain that you will too! WARNING: If you are faint of heart, this might not be the playlist for you!

Dynamic Day of Sports

This is for all of the girls who don’t quite understand sports AND this is for the boys who don’t understand why girls JUST DON’T GET IT! & this is also for my boyfriend on National Boyfriend Day!

I’d like to think that I know quite a bit about sports and have been to a handful of games *and actually paid attention*. But, this past Sunday I endured the most dynamic day of sports EVERRRR. Get a load of this – I was getting updates via my boyfriend and his ESPN app, and he was making me watch the Ryder Cup, a baseball game, and 3 football games, which was all followed by the Eagles game.

I understand the golf business and I believe I have a good grasp on baseball. However, football is just strange. These are the questions and statements I was driving him crazy with!

1. Just let me be – if I want to call Buffalo, New York’s team the Buffalos, I am going to call them the Buffalos.

2. How do you get interference? I thought that was how you stop the other team from getting points…

3. Football players are so gross. If they have a rag for sweat tucked into their pants, why must they lick their fingers? You are telling me that the only place on their body that isn’t sweaty right now, is their palms? Hello, my palms are sweating right now just from typing!

4. Is Clay Matthews related to Lief Erickson? Is he of Nordic descent? If I saw that coming towards me, I would just hand him the ball.

5. If your name is DeSean or LeSean, you definitely know how to play football.

6. OMG! That man weighs over 320 lbs – I can’t stop staring at his hind quarters – I wonder what I would look like if I stood next to him.

7. The Giants have the most heinous outfits I have ever seen.

8. If Andy Reid would give me 3 minutes of his time, I will tell him how the Eagles can win at football. (Apparently, my idea is against the rules…)

9. Are the Green Bay Packers from the cheese packing district? Why are they called that?

10. Wait, what’s the difference between a punter and a kicker? I thought they both kicked the ball!

Summer Checklist : Day 5

ITEM 25 : Get a good sweat going in neon/funky workout clothes!

Brightly colored clothes have been all the rage this summer. For some reason, I only decided to go along with this fashion trend when it came to my workout clothes. –> This could have something to do with my family being nervous wrecks about me being hit by oncoming traffic when I disappear for an hour+ long run. There is a safety feature in brightly colored clothes!

Whatever the case may be, I double down dog dare you to wear something crazy to workout in this week! Rock purple animal print pants to Zumba. Sport a fantastically bright orange shirt on your morning run! Wear a safety hazard yellow sports bra under a top to your Body Combat class. (take note that bright colors, especially corals, make skin tones pop and look tanner *body image booster*) Be proud of what you are doing to better your body, mind, and spirit – and don’t be afraid to work up a sweat in style!

Staying fit and funky

Summer Checklist : Day 10

ITEM 22 : Grill a Pizza!

I have always wanted to do this!!! Plus, grilling is the best way to cook in the summer! I played the grill master role this time and, let me tell you, I rocked it! Cooking with fire and great views – yeah, I’ll take you up on that offer! I am also known for my carmelized onions, I think I just have the magic touch, but sugar is key! I always cook without really measuring, but I tried to relate the ingrediants to normal methods of culinary measurements when I made the recipe. Check it out! You can always use your favorite toppings. But the fresh veggies, in my opinion, make this sweet and summery!
